20th/21st January - Departure and travel

We woke up to heavy snow the morning of the 20th and wondered whether our travel plans were going to be affected. We had an early morning flight on 21st so we decided to leave for Birmingham airport on 20th as we were already packed up. So, we stayed overnight at an airport hotel to ensure we wouldnt get stuck if the snow got any worse.

The snow didn't get any worse but at least we didn't have to get up so early (and neither did our eldest who was playing taxi driver). Flights to Amsterdam and Kilimanjaro were on time and uneventful. I passed some of the time watching Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' film.

We arrived at Kilimanjaro to be greeted by our driver who told us he went up Kilimanjaro in 11hrs, bottom to top!  The record is held by a French guy at 5 hours 30something but our driver doing 11 hours was quite something. He took us to Songota Falls Lodge, right off the beaten track down a road of massive holes (i.e. African!). We arrived at about 10.30pm and the owner Joice had set up a dressed and candlelit table next to our banda and served us hot soup and bread with some Kilimanjaro Beer, which was very welcome after our long journey. Kilimanjaro beer became quite a feature of our holiday!!
